First Step If Your Passport Is Lost or Stolen

Updated:
  • If your passport is lost or stolen, the first thing you need to do is prepare an affidavit. After this, visit the local police station to register an FIR, where you will receive a GD (General Diary) number. Once this procedure is completed, you can apply for a new passport.
  • To reissue a lost or stolen passport, you need to apply for its renewal, which can be done online through the Passport Seva Website.
  • During the application procedure, select the "Lost Passport" option. In this, you will need to provide details of your old passport, if available. On the appointment day, visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) with all required documents, including the Affidavit and FIR copy. Remember, a second passport is always issued under the renewal category; a fresh passport application is never used in such cases.
  • If you don't have the old passport details or a copy of it, you must first visit the Regional Passport Office (RPO) to obtain them. After that, you can proceed to fill out the online application.
  • The fee for reissuing a valid lost or stolen passport is Rs 3,000/-, while for an expired passport, the charges are Rs 1,500/-.
  • It is to be noted that a lost passport cannot be issued under the Tatkal category. It must be processed under the normal category.
